First Nations education is a life-long process. One cannot examine education at the post-secondary (PSE) level without also understanding Aboriginal Head-start and the k-12 system for example. While colonial assimilation policies of the past led to disastrous outcomes like residential schools, more passive assimilation policies create learning environments where First Nations only learn about Canada from 1867 forward and learn little of their own histories, cultures and languages.
First Nation education which is shaped and directed by First Nations themselves is an essential part of exercising their inherent jurisdiction in this area. Further, First Nations-controlled education empowers both First Nations individuals and communities by building capacity which is a key to nation-building.
While I intend to include additional resources in the future, what follows below is a collection of presentations and reports related to First Nation education that you might find useful. I have also included some articles with critique the system so that readers can also be informed about the various citicisms.
